Match Report

In hindsight, this was a match upon which nothing rode, but when it began Geelong could have potentially given up second place on the ladder and a home first-week final, and 10 second before its end, Brisbane were still a chance to finish in the top eight. As a result, these two teams turned on their second thrilling encounter of 2013, with Geelong prevailing by just one point when the final siren sounded.

Earlier, the Cats had gained the early advantage and led by 14 points at quarter time but as the afternoon wore on, and Geelong became aware that it would not need to win to maintain its ladder position (because Fremantle were being beaten easily at Docklands), its motivation was affected, allowing the Lions back into the match.

By half time the Lions led by six points but Geelong regained some focus in the third quarter in the third term to kick five goals to two and take a 20-point lead into the last change. But Brisbane would not be denied. After Josh Caddy kicked the first of the last term to give Geelong a 26-point break, the Lions kicked six of the last eight goals of the match to draw within two points. A snapshot from Ryan Lester with two seconds remaining that would have given Brisbane the lead was just touched on the line, leaving the Lions agonisingly short of a win and a potential place in the top eight.

As it turned out the win would have ultimately been in vain, with Carlton's victory over Port Adelaide, also by the barest of margins, enough to give the Blues eighth place regardless of any other round 23 results.

Best for the Cats included Jimmy Bartel (35 touches and a goal), Mathew Stokes (35 possessions) and Paul Chapman (two goals and 26 disposals), while Tom Rockliff (37 disposals), Ash McGrath (six goals) and Jack Redden (24 possessions) all played fine games for the Lions.

Geelong will play a home final against Fremantle next Saturday, the first ever-final to be played at Kardinia Park. (A round robin final was played at Geelong's Corio Oval in 1897.) Brisbane finishes in 12th position with 10 wins, and its excellent second half of 2013 makes the dismissal of Michael Voss as coach with three rounds remaining all the more intriguing.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Chris Scott (Geel): It was probably good for our supporters in a way, to see a really tight game down here [at Kardinia Park]. It's a tough situation. I've made a commitment to our players that I'll never lie to them, so I couldn't make the game - particularly in the second half - something it wasn't, given the situation in the Fremantle-St Kilda game, and it kept flashing up on the scoreboard, so all of our players knew as well. The fact that Brisbane had a lot to play for and that fact that we really didn't have anything - apart from carrying our form through to next week - had an impact on the game.

Mark Harvey (Bris): [The feeling is] empty, shallow, disappointed. The reality is that we probably left our run too late anyway but the players are to be commended on the way they conducted themselves today. It's been a difficult couple of weeks for the playing group in many ways but they've found a way to console each other and put it on each other to perform at a maximum level. What a game!
