Match Report

Geelong has bounced back from its shock loss to Brisbane at the Gabba last week, easily accounting for Fremantle in front of nearly 27,000 fans at Kardinia Park on Saturday night.

The Cats beat the Dockers at Fremantle coach Ross Lyon's own game, allowing his team just nine scoring shots at goal. Had it not been for Fremantle's accuracy - the Dockers kicked 7.2 - and Geelong's inaccuracy (11.19), the margin would have been far greater than the 41 points it was when the final siren sounded.

The win was a resounding response to Geelong's unexpected loss to the Lions last week, in which they surrendered a 52-point third-quarter lead. The Cats ensured there was no such comeback from Fremantle today, as they restricted the Dockers to just three scoring shots in the entire second half, while adding 6.12 to there own total.

Allen Christensen was dominant for Geelong, collecting the ball almost at will. He finished with a game-high 36 touches. Harry Taylor (28 disposals) and Andrew Mackie (27 possessions) provided good support. For Fremantle, Ryan Crowley stood out, restricting Cat captain Joel Selwood to just 1et disposals while gathering 15 touches of his own. Danyle Pearce (19 touches) and Tendai Mzungu (19 disposals and a goal) were also very good.

Geelong, who are a game clear of Essendon in second place on the ladder, will face up to top side Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday night in what could be a Grand Final preview. The two sides have had some classic encounters in recent years but the Hawks have not beaten the Cats since the 2008 Grand Final.

Despite the loss, Fremantle coach Ross Lyon was not overly concerned, saying that the Dockers were still well placed and were looking forward to the imminent return of several key players, including captain Matthew Pavlich and number one ruckman Aaron Sandilands. The Dockers place St Kilda at home next Saturday night, before a round 16 derby match against West Coast.
