Match Report

Projecting a club’s prospects for the season ahead based on the form and result of just one first round game can be fraught but if Geelong’s win over Adelaide at Kardinia Park on Thursday night is anything to go by, the Cats are in for yet another season of occupying the upper echelons of the AFL ladder. In arguably the best game of the season’s opening round, Geelong and the Crows put on a highly entertaining performance that hung in the balance until the Cats powered away in the last term to record a 38-point win.

In an eerie coincidence, the match marked Jimmy Bartel’s 250th appearance for Geelong, the final score of 18.11.119 to 12.9.81 was identical to that of the 2011 Grand Final, won by the Cats and in which Bartel was awarded the Norm Smith medal as best on ground.

The match started brightly for the Cats, with their two Mitches, Brown and Duncan registering goals within the first five minutes. When Tom Hawkins added another at the six-minute mark thoughts of a thrashing entered the minds of many at the ground. But Adelaide settled and was more than competitive for the remainder of the quarter, clawing the margin back to just three points at the first change. A highlight in the first term was a goal to Hamish McIntosh with his first kick in the blue and white hoops. McIntosh had switched to the Cats from North Melbourne after the 2012 season, but was plagued by injury throughout 2013 and did not play a senior game.

The free-flowing play of the first term continued in the second, with Geelong kicking five goals (three to the milestone man Bartel) and Adelaide four and at the long break, the Cats led 11.3 to 9.5.

Both sides adopted a more defensive mindset after half time but the game proved no less enthralling. The Crows outscored Geelong two goals to one to narrow the gap at the final change to just five points. Patrick Dangerfield kicked the first goal of the last quarter to give the Crows a one-point lead and hope of an upset win but it was to be Adelaide’s last hurrah. The Cats were not about to let Bartel’s special match be marked by a loss and they kicked the last six of the game, the penultimate of these to Jimmy himself, to run out convincing winners.

The Cats will venture to the Gabba to play Brisbane for their second-round match while Adelaide and Port Adelaide will mark the return of football to the Adelaide Oval with the first-ever Showdown at the ground.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Chris Scott (Geel): Our planning was pretty good, but much more [significant] than that was the spirit of our players. We knew that late in quarters they'd be difficult to combat and that's probably the way it played out in the first three quarters. We were a little bit uncertain of ourselves at three-quarter time. For our guys to grit their teeth and find a way was really encouraging.

Brenton Sanderson (Adel): We should have played four quarters, probably played two and a half. They got away to a really good start, Geelong, and they finished a lot better than us. The last quarter's statistics and the way we played was just really poor. To lose contested ball and tackles shouldn't happen. You should never lose both.

INJURIES
Geelong: Caddy (cut head)
Adelaide: Nil

SUBSTITUTES
Geelong: Mark Blicavs replaced Dawson Simpson in the third quarter.
Adelaide: Jarryd Lyons replaced Brad Crouch in the third quarter.

REPORTS: Lewis Johnston (Adelaide) for rough conduct on Steve Johnson (Geelong).
