Match Report

Geelong made short work of Brisbane as it tuned up for the finals with a big win over the Lions at Kardinia Park on Saturday night. The Cats won every quarter as it went on to win by more than 10 goals in front of 24,659 fans at its home venue.

The Cats opened the match with two goals in the first five minutes - one each to Corey Enright and Josh Caddy - and then kicked three further goals to two for the first term to establish a 16-point quarter-time lead. An entertaining second quarter saw 11 goals kicked, five by the visitors and six by the home team and Geelong led by 25 points a the long break.

Brisbane threatened briefly in the third quarter, with goals to Josh Green and Claye Beams cutting the margin to 14 but Geelong closed out the term with five of the last six goals and led by 43 points at the last change of ends. The Cats put the foot on the pedal in the last quarter, adding a further 5.4 to the Lions' 2.3 and cruised to a 62-point victory.

Mitch Duncan was outstanding for the Cats, with (35 disposals and eight marks), with Tom Hawkins (seven goals, 10 marks) a tower of strength up forward and Joel Selwood (29 touches and nine tackles) also very good. For Brisbane, Pearce Hanley was brilliant, with 31 possessions and two tackles, while Stefan Martin (32 disposals, six marks) and Lewis Taylor (22 touches and a goal) playing fine games.

Despite the loss, Brisbane will be relatively happy with the second half of its season. The Lions has a 1-8 record after nine games but there last 12 matches yielded seven wins and gave first-year coach Justin Leppitsch a good springboard for 2015.

Geelong, meanwhile, now moves on to the "real stuff", contending its eight consecutive finals series. The Cats will take on the Hawks in a Qualifying Final on Friday night.
