Match Report

West Coast has ended a disappointing season on a high note, defeating the Gold Coast Suns at Carrara on Sunday. The match was rendered meaningless in terms of finals participation after Richmond had secured the last place in the eight with a win over Sydney a day earlier but the Eagles ensured they saw out the season in a positive way, winning by 52 points.

The first quarter was a shoot-out, with each side kicking six goals. At quarter time, the Eagles held sway by just one point. The second term was just as even. although not as high scoring, with both Suns and Eagles booting three goals and West Coast with a two-point advantage at the long break.

The game was blown apart in the third term, with a massive 11-goal burst from the Eagles. Gold Coast could muster only two goals in that period and when the three-quarter time siren sounded, West Coast led 56 points and the result was a formality. After Eagles opened the last term with two more goals, the Suns finished the stronger of the two, kicking four of the last five goals to win the quarter and reduce the final margin to 52.

Josh Kennedy was a standout for West Coast, his eight goals taking his season tally to 61, six behind Coleman Medal winner Lance Franklin. Nic Natanui (28 hitouts, three goals) also had a great game, while for the Suns, Jack Martin (four goals, seven marks) and Brandon Matera (nine marks and 22 touches) had great games.

West Coast finishes its season with an 11-11 record, a game outside the top eight, with the Eagles left to rue losses to Essendon and Carlton by under a goal at Docklands during the year. The Suns were 7-4 after 11 games but faded late in the season to finish 10-12 and in 12th place.
