Match Report

The traditional Queen’s birthday saw a predicted Collingwood win, but it wasn’t the massacre it threatened to be at quarter time. After winning their first game of the season against Essendon the previous week in emotional circumstances, Melbourne came out extremely flat, as the Magpies piled on six goals to none. But to the Demons’ credit, they fought back and only lost the final three quarters by seven points. Collingwood jumped to the top of the table with the win, their eighth in a row going into a bye in round 12. The margin was only 26 points at three-quarter time and Demons fans were dreaming of the most unlikeliest of wins. But three goals in the first three minutes of the final quarter crushed those hopes. Brownlow medalist Dane Swan was outstanding with 42 possessions and two goals for Collingwood, while emerging midfielders Steele Sidebottom and Dayne Beams played big roles in the win. High-priced recruit Mitch Clark was the Demons’ best, booting four goals.

COACHES COMMENTS
Mark Neeld (Melb): That first quarter wasn't what we saw last week ... and that was really disappointing and our challenge is to eradicate as many of those [average quarters] as we can.

Nathan Buckley (Coll): I think 'Swanny's' rehabilitation and professionalism in the last three weeks has been excellent. He really has worked hard in the gym - dotted the Is and crossed the Ts - which might not potentially be an area where he's been renowned for in the past.

Umpires: Stevic, Nicholls, Bannister
