Match Report

Melbourne looked set for their third win of the season early in the game, but Port Adelaide was able to reel in the deficit and run away with the four points. It was the Power’s fifth win of the season as they broke a five-game losing streak. High flying Demon Jeremy Howe again took a spectacular leap that should earn him another nomination for Mark of the Year. But he was sent straight to the tribunal after allegedly smearing some of his own blood on the shorts of Port’s Tom Jonas. It is a bizarre incident, but it has happened before. Former Collingwood star Nathan Buckley was suspended for a week after wiping his bloodied nose on Geelong’s Cameron Ling 10 years earlier. As is the case with most games played in Darwin, conditions were extremely slippery and it made for an ugly spectacle in the second half. Port’s Jasper Pittard – playing his first game for 2012 – was taken to hospital after sickening collision with teammate Chad Wingard which resulted in broken ribs.

COACHES COMMENTS Mark Neeld (Melb): There were a whole heap of areas we were pleased with and obviously there were a few we weren't pleased with. The disposals were relatively even, clearances were even, we tackled well all evening.

Matthew Primus (Port): It was pleasing. We've certainly focused on our second halves and really running out the quarters. They came at us a little bit in the third quarter there so to be able to stand up and then run away with the game ... I don't think we dominated inside 50s in the last quarter but we were able to score pretty efficiently.

Umpires: Dalgleish, Hosking, Kamolins
