Match Report

North Melbourne guaranteed itself a place in this year's September action with a narrow win against Adelaide ay Bellerive Oval on Saturday afternoon. The Kangaroos controlled the match early, leading by two goals at quarter time but kicked only one goal in the second quarter to trail by one point at the long break. A free-flowing third term saw scores level on several occasions but the Crows kicked the last goal of the tern through Josh Jenkins to lead by five points at three-quarter time.

Adelaide extended that advantage to 11 points with a goal to Brad Crouch at the start of the last term but two goals and a behind to Jack Ziebell saw the Kangaroos wrest back the lead by the eight-minute mark of the term. They extended that lead to as much as 15 points during the last quarter but the Crows fought on, with North ultimately prevailing by seven points.

Ziebell was magnificent for North, with 25 possessions and four goals, while Levi Greenwood (26 disposals, eight marks) and Nick Dal Santo (28 touches and four marks) were also fine contributors. For the Crows, Scott Thompson was his usual prolific self, collecting 27 disposals and laying seven tackles, while Richard Douglas (27 touches, five tackles) and Brad Crouch (eight tackles, 22 possessions) were excellent all day.

The win locks North into sixth place on the ladder, with the outcome of its match against Melbourne irrelevant, at least in terms of ladder positioning. For Adelaide, the loss means its fate is now out of its hands. To make the eight, the Crows will need Collingwood to lose to Hawthorn on Friday night, Richmond to lose to Sydney on Saturday night and record a significant win against St Kilda on Sunday, depending on the outcome of the Gold Coast-West Coast game on the same day.
