Match Report

Sunday afternoon football took us to the Alberton Oval for the clash between the Magpies and the Eagles. Until their last outing against each other, the Magpies had very little luck against their fellow western suburbs mob with just one win from 12 games stretching from early-2009 to mid-2013. Then came Round 3 this year, the Magpies invading Oval Avenue and leaving with a 58-point win under their belt.

The Magpies almost came unstuck last weekend and the Eagles were downed by Adelaide at the same time and early on, the Magpies looked like once again romping away with the points. They opened the day's proceedings with a 6.3 to 3.3 first term to lead by three goals at quarter-time. The gap didn't get too much bigger in the second term, inaccuracy on goal starting to creep into the Port camp as they added 4.5 while the Eagles took 4.1 as the deficit was extended to 22 points by half-time. When play resumed, the Eagles would mount a serious challenge to the Magpies, the inaccuracy bug continuing to hamper their efforts into the third quarter. The gap would be reeled back to seven points by three quarter-time, the Eagles bagging 5.3 to the Magpies' 2.6. But sure enough and as many probably expected, the 'Pies were jolted out of their funk as they kicked 6.2 to the Eagles' 3.4, the bug changing camps at the worst time. Port would again leave Woodville as victors, taking a 23-point win.

Steve Summerton was the everywhere man and was named best for Port, while the Eagles named Scott Lewis as their best on ground.
