Match Report

Port Adelaide has recovered from a round three loss to North Melbourne to thrash Brisbane at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday and re-establish a place in the top four. The Power conceded the first two goals of the match but recovered to lead by eight points at quarter time, before going on to assert complete authority over the Lions for the remaining three quarters of the match.

For Brisbane coach Justin Leppitsch, his debut season at the helm has gone from bad to worse. After competitive performances in the first two rounds against the top two sides Hawthorn and Geelong, the Lions have been thrashed by the Suns and now the Power. Compounding the misery, the Lions lost Daniel Rich to a season-ending injury last week and a further knee injury to ruckman Matthew Leuenberger on Saturday. Brisbane medical staff are waiting on the results of scans on the knee but are hopeful the injury will not also be a season-ending one.

In contrast the Power came away from the match injury-free, in third position on the ladder and with a very healthy percentage of 163.7, second only to Hawthorn. Port's win was led by a magnificent seven goal performance from ex-Tiger Jay Schulz, but the Power had many fine players, including the evergreen Kane Cornes (38 disposals, seven tackles), Brad Ebert (35 touches and nine marks) and another ex-Tiger, Matt White (26 possessions, nine marks).

There weren't many positives from a Brisbane perspective but Tom Rockliff (30 possessions and 13 tackles), Jack Redden (22 disposals and five tackles) and Jed Adcock (21 disposals, nine marks) could hold their heads high.

The Lions have a potentially slightly easier fortnight ahead, hosting 14th-placed Richmond on Thursday night before heading to New Zealand to take on St Kilda on ANZAC Day. Port has a couple of testing weeks to come - the Power will head to Perth to take on West Coast on Saturday before hosting Geelong in round six at the Adelaide Oval.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Ken Hinkley (Port): Our consistency through the whole game [was the best thing]. We haven't been able to, probably in my time, put together a pretty strong four quarters of football and the boys were able to do that today and work their way into a really strong position and then kept going, which was really pleasing. Our defensive pressure all over the ground was pretty pleasing.

Justin Leppitsch (Bris): We probably lost a bit of faith in what we were doing. We made a couple of skill errors, turned the ball over and they capitalised. That what happens - you go into your shell a little bit and they ran all over us. We probably spent all our energy trying to defend rather than take the game on. They're a good running team, they're really good.
