Match Report

Richmond's dream run into the finals came to a swift and brutal conclusion at the hands of a ruthless Port Adelaide at the Adelaide on Sunday. The Tigers came into the match full of hope on the back of nine successive victories but a blistering start to the match by the Power quickly turned the Tiger dream into a nightmare from which there would be no waking up in 2014.

There are those that would say that Richmond's season effectively ended before the ball was bounced on Sunday after Tiger skipper won the toss and elected to kick into the wind. Cotchin later said he didn't believe the wind would be much of a factor but whatever advantage it gave was taken swiftly and decisively by the Power as Justin Westhoff goaled within the first two minutes to set off a run of Port Adelaide majors. Jay Schulz followed up with his first at the four-minute mark as the result of a Tiger turnover, and skipper Travis Boak made it three goals in eight minutes with a mark and goal that had Richmond hitting the panic button.

The Tigers were getting their hands on the ball but anything that could go wrong when they had it, did, as exemplified by Bachar Houli charging of defence, looking to set up a Richmond attack but losing control on the second bounce, with Port whisking the ball away and scoring. Matt White scored Port's fourth at the nine-minute mark and Jared Polec, Ollie Wines and Jake Neade all followed up with goals in the next nine minutes to make the scoreline 43-0 in the Power's favour. Reece Conca finally kicked Richmond's first goal at the 21-minute mark but another Port goal to Angus Monfries saw the Power leading 8.1.49 to 1.1.7 at the first break.

Kicking against the breeze barely failed to stop Port in the second term as they added a further seven goals to two to lead by a massive 69 points at the long break. There was never going to be any coming back from that sort of deficit and the best the Tigers could hope for was a more competitive effort in the second half. They delivered on that to a certain degree in the third quarter, licking three goals of their own as the Power added another five, and then made the most of Port going into self-preservation mode in the last term, kicking five goals to one to reduce the final margin to an almost respectable 57 points.

Port was led magnificently by captain Travis Boak (34 disposals, four marks), who received great support from Robbie Gray (25 disposals and a goal) and Justin Westhoff (21 touches and two goals). For the Tigers, Brett Deledio (29 possessions, five marks) , Cotchin (16 possessions, four tackles) and Dustin Martin (29 disposals, four marks) all put in solid four-quarter efforts.

Richmond's season ends as it did in 2013, with a disappointing loss in the first week of the finals, although Tiger fans can take hope from the fact that their team finished the home and away season with nine wins on the trot and made the finals for a second year running for the first time since 1974-75. The Power will take in Fremantle at Subiaco in a Semi Final next Saturday in a bid to go one step further than last year.
