Match Report

For the second consecutive week, Richmond was brave against a heavyweight team but not quite polished enough to get the job done. The Tigers had their chances to snatch an upset victory against the dominant Eagles, but they couldn’t convert when it counted. It was West Coast’s first victory over the Tigers in three attempts at Etihad Stadium. Richmond forward Jack Riewoldt, who had been struggling for form all season, missed a gettable set shot late in the match that would have given the Tigers the lead. West Coast then took the ball directly up the other end, via a spectacular leap from Beau Waters, and Jack Darling sealed the match for the visitors. The win secured West Coast’s position on top of the table with Sydney as the only undefeated teams. Richmond players, coaches and fans were all crestfallen after the final siren - having also come up a smidgin short the previous week against Geelong. Captain Chris Newman said the next day the Tigers would no longer accept honourable losses. Eagles playmaker Daniel Kerr played a crucial role in his side’s victory. On the other hand, Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin nearly propelled the Tigers to a famous win under the roof.

COACHES COMMENTS
Damien Hardwick (Rich): I don't think I've ever been as disappointed as I was today. Probably just for the work rate the players put in, the courage they showed ... to come away shy of the four points is really disappointing and a bitter pill to swallow.

John Worsfold (WCE): It gets a bit frustrating. I don't think many of our backs rotated in the first quarter, with Brown off. I've raised it with (AFL football operations manager) Adrian Anderson. If a player's concussed or got an injury they really want to assess, and they want to take 20 or 30 minutes, can you use your sub in that role and reassess everything ... at half-time?

Umpires: McBurney, Armstrong, Bannister
