Match Report

Sydney has overcome torrential rain, a waterlogged SCG and a feisty Carlton comeback to record its ninth win of the season and reclaim a place in the top four.

The Swans jumped out of the blocks, adapting to the rain a slippery conditions far more quickly than their Carlton opponents, to kick all four of the opening term goals and establish a 27-point lead at quarter time, one which seemed almost insurmountable in the appalling weather conditions. And although the Blues adapted to a certain extent in the second term, keeping the Swans to a solitary goal, they were unable to make an impact of their own, their only goal coming from a very lucky free kick awarded to Josh Bootsma.

Trailing by 28 points at the long break, Carlton were much improved in the third term, and peppered the goals throughout, kicking 3.5 while restricting Sydney to just 1.2. At the last change of ends, the Blues had edged to within 13 points of Sydney.

That lead was cut to just seven when Zach Tuohy kicked the opening goal of the last term and it could have been reduced to under a goal, when Andrew Walker had a chance to kick another from just 15 metres out at the nine-minute mark. But Walker inexplicably opted for a dribble kick along the ground and it was cut off and rushed through for a behind by Dane Rampe.

The miss seemed to take the wind out of Carlton's sails. The Swans kicked the next three behinds before goals to Ben McGlynn and Tom Mitchell saw them home by 22 points.

Best for the Swans were Craig Bird (33 possessions), McGlynn (two goals and 12 disposals) and Ryan O'Keefe (29 touches), while Carlton were well-served by Bryce Gibbs (26 touches and a goal), Chris Judd (22 possessions) and Lachie Henderson (21 disposals).

Having returned to the top four, the Swans have a big chance to consolidate that place over the next two weeks, with games against the bottom two sides, Melbourne and GWS. Carlton, meanwhile, finds itself in ninth place on the ladder, two games adrift of Collingwood, whom they will meet this Friday night. A win against the Pies would see the Blues remain in the hunt for the finals but a loss could spell the end of any September hopes.
