Sydney retained their position on top of the ladder with a hard fought victory over St Kilda. The Swans might have won by 29 points, but the game was much closer than that margin suggests. Four goals in the final five minutes blew the result out to a margin which the Saints didn’t deserve. It was a missed opportunity for St Kilda and one they could be ruing come the end of the season. A win would have seen them secure a position in the eight for the time being, while the loss saw the Saints fall a game behind eighth placed North Melbourne. St Kilda small forward Stephen Milne (five goals) was outstanding, kicking three first quarter goals to thrust his side to a surprising 19-point quarter time lead. It was well-rounded team effort from Sydney, but key midfielder Josh Kennedy (35 possessions) played a key role in the Swans’ seventh straight victory, particularly his efforts in the final quarter. Sydney ruckman Shane Mumford’s injured-plagued season continued as he went off at half-time with a knee injury and didn’t return.

COACHES COMMENTS
John Longmire (Syd): We really respect St Kilda as a team and really wanted to get after them today. We were a bit disappointed in the result from last time and I think we owed them one, so it was good to get the win.

Scott Watters (StK): We expect to be more than competitive. There were elements of the game I guess you could say were positive and we'll take something out of that, but we had an opportunity to win that game and didn't take our chances in the last quarter.
