West Coast made up for the disappointment of a shock loss to Brisbane before their week’s break to fight off a determined Carlton. The Eagles jumped back to the top of the ladder, but they were made to work hard for the victory – only holding off the persistent Blues late in the last quarter. This was a Thursday night contest, with the AFL keen to trial different timeslots for the next TV rights deal. The Blues were brave, but ultimately went down to lose their fifth game in six rounds. Chris Judd had a night to forget against the club he captained to the 2006 premiership. The Carlton skipper had just 12 dispoals for the night and gave away a crucial, but dubious 50m penalty early in the final term with the game in the balance. Injured Carlton players Marc Murphy and Jeremy Laidler got themselves into hot water with the AFL after they posted comments about the umpiring during the game on social media website, Twitter. The win was the Eagles 17th consecutive at their Patersons Stadium fortress.

COACHES COMMENTS
John Worsfold (WC): They won more of the footy, they got it inside 50 more and they basically did what we'd been doing. So the challenge to the players was the game's up for grabs at three-quarter time, it's going to be the team that wants to play with the higher intensity over the next 30 minutes that will give themselves the chance of winning.

Brett Ratten (Carl): I don't think any club puts four games in 18 days in a [fixtures] submission. You get the hand you're dealt. We've just had a tough patch at the moment and we won't have anything like that in the second half of the year. We just have to deal with it.
