Match Report

The natives are getting restless out Whitten Oval way after the Western Bulldogs succumbed to bottom side Brisbane at Docklands on Saturday night. After having given up leads in winnable games in recent weeks, the Dogs, who many had expected to take big strides this season, were strong favourites to get back on the winners list against an undermanned Lions outfit.

However, after starting the match brightly, the Bulldogs were stunned by a rampant Brisbane team in the second quarter. With small men Josh Green, Dayne Zorko and Lewis Taylor running riot at the stoppages and proving far too fleet of foot for the Bulldogs, the Lions rammed on 7.5 to 2.2 for the term to leave the Doggies 27 points adrift and in disarray at the long break.

To the Bulldogs credit, they regroup and closed down Brisbane to a large degree in the third term, holding the Lions to just 2.1. But they could not convert their improving midfield dominance into goals, their inefficient forward line rewarding the hard work with just two goals. The Dogs turned up the heat another notch in the final term. Jarrad Grant, returning from injury and playing hist first match of 2014, marked and goaled at the three-minute mark, and when Tom Williams added another six minutes later, the difference was back to 17 points with plenty of time left on the clock.

Josh Green then scored a crucial goal for the Lions at the 13-minute mark and the Lions, 23 points clear, appeared to be home. The fast-finishing Bulldogs continued to attack. Cooney goaled to bring the margin back to 17 and then Will Minson, Luke Dahlhaus and Daniel Giansiracusa all had chances to put serious scoreboard pressure on the Lions. Sadly for the Dogs. all three missed gettable shots. Giansiracusa received another chance at the 26-minute mark and converted his kick but time ran out and the Lions prevailed by eight points, their second consecutive win after losing eight of their first nine matches.

That win lifted Brisbane from the bottom of the ladder to 16th and the Lions have a big chance of making it three in a row when they host the side that replaced them at the foot of the ladder, GWS this Saturday night.

The Dogs are languishing in 14th place on the ladder with a 3-8 record. It could have been a vastly different scenario for Brendan McCartney's men, with three of the team's last five losses by margins of under 10 points. As it is, the grumblings about the Bulldogs are growing louder and the club is feeling the heat. With matches against top four sides Collingwood and Port Adelaide to come in rounds 13 and 14, things aren't likely to get any rosier for the Dogs anytime soon.
