Born in Adelaide, Stephen Rowe moved with his family to Perth when he was aged six. He played junior football with South Fremantle, winning the Jack Clarke Medal for fairest and best in the WAFL colts competition in 1984. The following year saw him make his senior debut for the Bulldogs and he went on to play a total of 27 league games over the course of that season and the next.

In 1987 Stephen Rowe was one of a number of West Australian-based players to transfer to SANFL clubs out of fears that the standard of the WAFL competition would be diluted by the advent of the West Coast Eagles. Rowe lined up with Norwood and, after a somewhat slow start, developed into one of the club’s best loved and most consistent players. Boasting considerable courage allied to boundless enthusiasm he played mainly as an on-baller. Prior to the start of the 1991 season he was drafted by Adelaide but never quite managed to hold down a regular place in the team and spent much of his time back in the SANFL with Norwood. Rowe’s AFL career comprised 29 games from 1991 to 1993 and in 1995.

He continued with the Redlegs until 1997, with the last of his 185 games for the club coming in that year’s winning grand final against Port Adelaide.
