From VAFA side Collegians, having earlier played for University Blacks, Ray Allsop continued to play as an amateur after commencing his VFL career with Richmond. A clever and courageous rover with good goal sense, he played 54 games and scored 69 goals for the Tigers between 1955 and 1959. He also played three times for Victoria in 1957, kicking five goals.

Once his VFL career was over Allsop spent the 1960 season with VFA side Oakleigh, for whom he would play 14 games and boot 24 goals, highlighted by participation, as first rover, in an 18.14 to 8.14 grand final defeat of Sandringham.
