Biography

Darren Glass (born 14 May 1981) is an Australian rules footballer who is the current captain of the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL). Originally from Northam, Western Australia, he played for the Perth Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL), before being recruited by West Coast with the 11th pick in the 1999 National Draft, making his debut for the club the following season. Playing mainly as a full-back, Glass is considered one of the best players in his position in the AFL, having been named in the All-Australian team on three occasions, most recently in 2011. He was named captain of the club in 2008, after Chris Judd was traded to Carlton, and has won club best and fairest awards in 2007, 2009, and 2011. Overall, Glass has played 222 games for West Coast, the third-most of any current player.

He was recruited as the number 11 draft pick in the 1999 AFL Draft from Perth. Darren made his debut for the Eagles in Round 4, 2000 against Adelaide.

Glass, who had a relatively low profile in a team of well known stars such as Ben Cousins, Chris Judd, and Daniel Kerr, was named as the official All-Australian full-back in 2006, 2007 and 2011 by the AFL.The dependable full-back is now recognised as one of the AFL’s elite defenders after another fine season. Has the strength and versatility to play on forwards of any shape or size, and his duels with Sydney’s Barry Hall – there were four in all – will live long in the memory. Second place in the best and fairest was a fair reflection of his efforts.

He had another excellent 2007 season but had a lowlight. with Justin Westhoff claiming his scalps in Port's Rnd 15 trashing of West Coast nevertheless, Glass won West Coast's Club Champion Award being West Coast's best in a season that saw them lose their premiership defence.

On 9 November 2007, Glass was announced the new captain of West Coast with the departure of Chris Judd back to Victoria. Glass has been appointed to lead the recovery of the club after a series of off-field scandals. West Coast have had a poor year in his first year of captaincy, suffering from the loss of Judd and Cousins as well as from injuries to key players, including Glass himself.

After another fantastic season, playing all 22 matches for the West Coast Eagles in 2009, Glass won his second Club Champion award ahead of fellow defender Shannon Hurn. He had an injury-interrupted 2010 but missed only three games in 2011 as the Eagles returned to again become a finals force. He continues to lead the Eagles into the 2012 season.
