Alf Gough was a forward pocket and second rover from Leopold, who played 63 games across two spells at South Melbourne. His goal late in the third quarter of the 1909 VFL Grand Final proved to be the game’s decisive moment, providing a break that Carlton was unable to bridge during the final term.

Gough left South Melbourne at the end of 1911 to spend three years in New South Wales. He appeared for Sydney club Paddington and for a while lived in Lithgow, before returning to South Melbourne in 1915.

He was a noted placekicker who astonished Sydney crowds with his execution of the skill.
