After commencing with Essendon in the under 19s Bob Wilson was loaned out to Brunswick in the VFA first division where he played from 1961 to 1964. After returning to the Bombers he played mostly reserves football, with the exception of four senior appearances in 1966. He then returned to Brunswick, and, by 1968, had taken his final tally of games played with that club to 49.

Far and away the most noteworthy phase of Wilson’s career took place in Tasmania where he captain-coached Scottsdale to three NTFA premierships plus the 1973 state title. He also represented Tasmania at the 1972 Perth carnival. Most of his football was played as an on-baller.
