After playing 60 SANFL games and scoring 52 goals for Sturt from 1986 to 1988 Carl Dilena was drafted by Fitzroy in 1988 and made his senior VFL debut the following year. A lightning fast midfielder, he lacked consistency but his best football was very good indeed. After 23 games and 15 goals for the Lions in 1989-90 he transferred to North Melbourne where he faded after a strong start. In just his second match with the ‘Roos he amassed 39 disposals in a match against Adelaide, but in 1992 he only managed a couple of appearances for the year. In 1991-2 he played 10 games and kicked eight goals for the Kangaroos. He later returned to the club as chief executive officer.
