Clyde Helmer was a strong, long-armed key forward who excelled at taking soaring finger-tip marks. He also boasted good ground skills, was difficult to tackle and showed fine anticipation. He could kick prodigious distances with either foot, favouring the torpedo punt.

His Geelong career comprised 71 VFL games in which he kicked 137 goals between 1937 and 1941. He was the Cats’ top goal kicker in 1938 with 74 goals. In 1942, following Geelong’s enforced temporary exit from the League, he crossed to Melbourne where he added two games and three goals to his respective career tallies. He also represented Victoria twice.
