A back pocket and half back flanker with plenty of pace and courage, Damien Ryan impressed during his first few games with Richmond, but struggled thereafter to keep his place in the team. After 30 AFL games and six goals for the Tigers from 1996 to 1998 he crossed to St Kilda where, once again, he won considerable admiration early on. Indeed, he made a career best 20 senior appearances in 1997, but after that he seemingly lost his way and dropped down the pecking order, managing just 10 games in two seasons before being de-listed.
