Darren O’Brien was a prominent player for West Perth during what developed into a noteworthy era for the club. Typically used in the midfield, he was also a capable defender if the need arose. From 1988 to 1995 and in 1998 he played 159 games and registered 83 goals for the Falcons, winning a club fairest and best award in 1994. He made a telling contribution to the club’s 1993 grand final defeat of Claremont, and also played in the following two grand finals, a loss against East Fremantle in 1994, and a victory over Subiaco in 1995. Perhaps surprisingly, he was never chosen to represent Western Australia.
In 1996 and 1997 O’Brien made 24 appearances and booted nine goals for Melbourne in the AFL. He produced a handful of fine performances but overall was too inconsistent to be retained. The fact that he was 28 at the time of his de-listing may also have told against him.
