A highly dependable back pocket, David Ackerly enjoyed a fine 191-game career with two clubs. He played his first senior game with the Swans, then still based in South Melbourne, in 1979, having come up through South's junior ranks, and quickly established himself as a permanent member of the team's last line of defence. Ackerley moved with the Swans to Sydney in 1982 but after a fall out with the administration, switched to North Melbourne prior to the 1986 season. He proved to be just as reliable in defence for North over the next four seasons, although injury limited his appearances on the field in his last two years, 1988 and 1989.
