David Hynes was an imposing key position player and ruckman who enjoyed a noteworthy career in three competitions. He commenced in 1985 with SANFL club Port Adelaide for whom his 121 appearances in six seasons included the winning grand finals of 1988, 1989 and 1990. Between 1991 and 1995 he played 73 AFL games for West Coast and was a premiership player in 1994. When not selected for the Eagles he played for South Fremantle whom he helped to a flag in 1997 with a Simpson Medal-winning display in a grand final defeat of East Fremantle. As regards his AFL career he switched to cross-city rivals Fremantle in 1996 and played 13 games for the club over two seasons. The South Freo portion of his career involved 62 appearances from 1991 to 1998.
