Originally from Ballarat, David Shaw attended university in Melbourne and played football for University Blues, from where he was recruited by Essendon in 1959. A ready made senior player, he was dashing, robust, and exceptionally versatile, playing in literally every position on the ground during the course of his 10-season, 177-game league career. The highlight of that career came in 1962 when, playing in a back pocket, he was among the Bombers' best players in a 13.12 (90) to 8.10 (58) Grand Final defeat of Carlton.
Shaw was also a member of the winning Grand Final team against St Kilda three years later but was forced to leave the fray early with a knee injury. His last game for the Dons was the three-point Grand Final loss to Carlton in 1968 when he played on a half forward flank. Shaw later had two brief stints as an Essendon committeeman and was club president between 1993 and 1996.
