After working his way up through the ranks at Sturt David Welsby made his senior league debut in 1987. Drafted by Geelong in 1988, he did not cross over until two years later, but after only managing a couple of senior AFL appearances for the season he returned home. His Sturt career comprised 85 SANFL games from 1987 to 1989 and in 1991-2. He booted 22 goals. Welsby played most of his football at full back, a position which ensured he was often in the thick of the action given Sturt’s generally lamentable record during his career.
