A rover capable of kicking bags of goals, Gavin Mitchell hailed from West Kimberley, and commenced his senior league career in 1994 with Claremont. He would end up playing 45 games and scoring 40 goals for the Tigers, with his appearances including the losing grand final of 1994 against East Fremantle. In 1996 and 1997 he played AFL football for Fremantle in tandem with his Claremont career. He was particularly impressive in his debut season with the Dockers, playing all bar one match for the year, but his form dipped in 1997 and, after 36 games and 18 goals in two seasons, he ended up being traded to St Kilda. During his time in the west he played three matches for Western Australia.

His time with the Saints was remarkably similar to his Claremont stint in that he was impressive early, only for his form to taper off later. When he was de-listed in 2000 he had added 52 AFL games and 64 goals to his respective career tallies.
