After playing 31 SANFL games in three seasons with Woodville West Torrens Glenn Freeborn was drafted by North Melbourne for whom he proved a decided acquisition. In the Kangas' 1996 grand final defeat of Sydney he produced a telling burst of 3 goals during the second quarter which put his side firmly on the road to victory. He also played in North's losing grand final team of 1998 against Adelaide.

Lithe, alert and with a keen goal sense Freeborn was also highly adaptable and could play in a wide range of positions. In 1999, after 55 games and 27 goals for the 'Roos, he moved to Collingwood where he soon assumed a leadership role whilst playing some of the best football of his career. The 2002 season saw him playing in his third AFL grand final but despite putting in a superb performance across half back the Magpies lost to Brisbane. His form deteriorated in 2003 and, after playing just 3 senior games for the year, Glenn Freeborn was delisted but not before he had helped Williamstown (then affiliated with Collingwood) to that year's VFL premiership courtesy of a 29 point grand final defeat of Box Hill.
