Greg Hutchison was a useful utility who played almost the same number of senior and reserves games for Melbourne over the course of his ten year career. After managing just seven appearances in his first couple of seasons he settled down to become a semi-regular member of the League. Late in his career, however, he was undermined to a considerable extent by injury. His last game in a Melbourne jumper came in the 1984 reserves grand final which saw the Dees downing Carlton.

Between 1975 and 1984 Hutchison played 96 VFL games for Melbourne and booted 21 goals. He also played 115 games for the twos. In 1986 he was appointed captain-coach of VFA team Prahran whom he steered to a second division premiership the following year. He also played representative football for the Association.

Once his playing days were over he embarked on a fruitful coaching career which included a brief 13 game stint as caretaker coach of Melbourne in 1997.
