Son of Wally Naismith, Herb Naismith was recruited by Collingwood from Alphington Amateurs. A follower, he played 75 VFL games for the Magpies from 1938 to 1946, kicking 15 goals. A fringe player during the first half of his career, he began to achieve more regular senior selection from 1942 onwards.
