A tough, gritty rover with good goal sense St Kilda’s Ian ‘Doggy’ Rowland suffered the major disappointment of losing form during the 1966 finals series and being dropped from the team for the ultimately triumphant grand final clash with Collingwood. He promptly retired.
A little lacking in pace perhaps, Rowland compensated with pluck and persistence. Between 1960 and 1966 he played 109 games for the Saints and kicked 96 goals. His tally of 26 goals in 1961 was good enough to top the club’s list.
