John W Daly was the son of John D. Daly and the nephew of Anthony Daly, and every bit as accomplished a player as either of them. Usually referred to as ‘Jack’ to distinguish him from his father, he roved with great success in 76 league games for South Adelaide between 1919 and 1924, over the course of which he booted 86 goals. Pacy, tricky and skilful, he loved nothing better than to kick a goal, and was South’s leading goal kicker in 1923 with 24 of them. Daly was a member of South Australia’s 1921 Perth carnival team, and played a total of eight interstate matches, kicking 12 goals.
