From Pembroke College, utility Jay Viney was recruited by Sturt in 1987, and, after commencing in the under 19s, was playing senior football before the end of the season. On the strength of this meteoric rise he was drafted by Melbourne, but unlike his older brother Todd, found it difficult to establish himself, managing just 23 senior games and four goals for the Demons between 1988 and 1991. In 1990 he won the Demons’ reserves best and fairest award. He returned to Sturt in 1992 and went on to captain the club in 1993 and 1994. Internal dissension at Unley precipitated his departure to North Adelaide having played 69 games and kicked 71 goals for the Double Blues. Whilst with North he produced the best and most convincing football of his career. From 1995 to 1999 he played 88 SANFL games and scored five goals for the Roosters, whom he captained in 1997-8.
