John Robertson started out in Hawthorn’s thirds before rising up through the ranks and playing 10 VFL games and scoring four goals in 1959-60. It was after crossing to Richmond in 1961 that he came into his own, however. A hard working and dependable half back flanker, albeit one with more than a touch of brilliance to his play, he ran second in the Tigers’ best and fairest award in his first season with them, and also claimed the best first year player trophy. From 1961 to 1965 he played 43 games for Richmond and registered one goal.
