The former South Melbourne ruckman. Ken Boyd, gained $6,600 libel damages today against the Melbourne Herald, over a country football incident. Boyd. 28, claimed that a Herald story falsely implied that he struck, and broke the jaw of a former Collingwood captain, Frank Tuck, in the country match in May, 1964. Boyd is now captain coach of Wangaratta Rovers. A six-man Supreme Court jury accepted the view that the article had damaged Boyd’s reputation in the public eye.¹

Ken Boyd commenced in the thirds at South Melbourne before making his senior VFL debut in round six of the 1957 season. A ruckman, he played the game hard and not always fair, and over the course of his five season career he missed no fewer than 30 matches through suspension. That career comprised 60 VFL games in which he registered 37 goals. After quitting the VFL scene he joined Ovens and Murray Football League side Wangaratta Rovers whom he steered to consecutive flags as playing coach in 1964 and 1965. He later returned to South Melbourne as a selector.
