Although he was not a regular senior player North Melbourne’s Mark Dawson could usually be relied on to give a good account of himself when selected. Injuries played a part in restricting his appearances but his great versatility made him a valuable footballer. His 59 VFL games between 1972 and 1978 included the losing grand final of 1976 against Hawthorn. He was close to selection for the previous season’s flag decider against the same opponent but the fact that he had not played since recently injuring a hamstring led to his being omitted.

Dawson spent the 1979 season playing 19 SANFL games for Port Adelaide, the last of which was the grand final in which he contributed two goals to the Magpies’ 31 point defeat of South Adelaide.
