From Eltham, rover Matt Ryan made his VFL debut with Collingwood in 1985, and after two difficult years he enjoyed a break-out season in 1987. In point of fact, it would prove to be the single most outstanding season of his entire career, highlighted by his amassing a team high 478 disposals, running second in the Copeland Trophy, and kicking 28 goals, a tally only exceeded by full forward Brian Taylor. Thereafter, however, Ryan struggled to maintain the same level of performance.

After 45 VFL games and 44 goals in five seasons with the Magpies Ryan was traded to Sydney where he added 10 AFL games and eight goals in 1990. His final port of call was Brisbane where he played some useful games but struggled towards the end of his two season, 18 game, eight goal stint.
