After being rejected by Carlton Maurie Gibb was given a second chance to break into league ranks with Melbourne, a chance he seized with both hands. Highly versatile, he soon proved himself capable of holding down any position ahead of centre from where he was eminently capable of kicking swags of goals as well as bringing team mates into the play witgh intelligent ball use. Gibb  played 133 VFL games and kicked 167 goals for Melbourne from 1934 to 1943. A member of Melbourne premiership teams in 1940 and 1941 an earlier career highlight was topping the club goal kicking list in 1935 with 59 goals. On two occasions during that season he booted bags of 9 goals. Chiefly used at full forward early in his career he later developed into a smooth moving, highly skilled half forward flanker.

Maurie Gibb retired from football in 1944 and joined the army. He later saw active service in New Guinea.
