Maurie Hunter had already served a seven year apprenticeship in country football and been a member of four premiership-winning teams by the time he joined Richmond from St Patrick’s Albury in 1929. He impressed from the start and was clearly a ready made League footballer.

Fast, elusive and a superb kick with either foot, he could play both as a rover or, more commonly, a forward. He played in Richmond’s losing grand final team against Collingwood in his debut season and was a member three years later of the grand final triumph over Carlton. A club best and fairest winner in 1931 he skippered the club the same year. He left Richmond after the 1933 season having played 81 VFL games and booted 159 goals. He also played four games and kicked four goals for Victoria.

During the first half of the 1934 season Hunter played for VFA side Camberwell but he finished the year as well as his playing career at Richmond Districts.
