Michael Conlan was brought up in Tasmania before moving to Canberra when his father Neil, himself a former footballer of note, was appointed coach of Manuka, which was the club for which Michael first played senior footy, and where he came to the attention of Fitzroy. Recruited by the Lions he made his senior VFL debut in 1977 and had played 210 games and kicked 395 goals by the time he retired in 1989. Of robust build, he was a relentlessly hard running, all-action type who greatly endeared himself to the Fitzroy supporters who loved nothing better than seeing him explode through packs of players and kick vital goals. Most of his football was played as a half forward flanker but he could also take a run on the ball or hold down centre.

Despite being a proud Tasmanian Mick Conlan somehow managed to play state of origin football for Victoria (4 times) and the ACT but never for his home state. After departing the VFL scene he captain-coached VFA club Sandringham for a time.
