Mick Maguire is believed to have been the youngest ever league debutant for Richmond. When he took to the field for the Wasps in the opening round of the 1910 season against South Melbourne he was aged just 15 years, 328 days. A rover and small forward, he was clearly no mean footballer, as evidenced by his feat in topping Richmond’s goal kicking list in 1910 with 20 goals and the following year with 29.

Half way through the 1912 season, after 39 games and 62 goals in a Richmond jumper, Maguire crossed to Melbourne, where he was to play 19 VFL games and score 23 goals. He only played two matches in 1914 because the boxing career he had been pursuing simultaneously with his football career was beginning to take off. Ultimately though he opted to focus on football, playing for Northcote in the VFA in 1915, adding nine games and 10 goals for Collingwood in 1918, and rounding off his time as a player back at Northcote.
