After spending the 1935 and part of the 1936 seasons with Coburg in the VFA, where he played 25 games and kicked two goals, Mick McFarlane joined Essendon, and made his senior VFL debut in round eight 1936. After playing 10 games for the Dons in his debut season he managed just a single appearance the following year. He booted 15 goals. He was then cleared to North Melbourne where he played mostly as a defender. McFarlane had previously played some seconds football with North and went on to add 43 senior games and four goals over four seasons.
