That he boasted real football talent was undeniable, but he never stayed at one club for long enough truly to maximise his talents. He also suffered the disappointment of losing two years of football to the war, at a time when he was arguably at his peak.

He commenced his senior football career with Port Melbourne in 1907 before crossing to Fitzroy during the 1908 season. However, in just under two years with the Roys he could only manage a couple of appearances. In 1911 he returned to Port Melbourne, taking his final tally of games played with the club to 19. He then spent a season with Beverley before making a return to league ranks in 1913 with Richmond. His two and a half season stint with the Wasps saw him play 26 VFL games and score four goals. Respected for his pace and competitiveness, he played as a follower for the most part. His final stint of league football in 1915 and 1918 saw him add 22 games and a couple of goals for Essendon, with the 1916-17 seasons essentially being a wash-out as the Dons withdrew from the competition.
