At Fitzroy powerful Broderick was an immediate success. Built on the lines of a powerful medium sized tank ..... Broderick took over the centre so firmly with Fitzroy that he was rarely beaten throughout the season.¹

At the outset of his VFL career with Collingwood Neville Broderick was a serviceable player before really coming into his own at Fitzroy, where he played mainly as a centreman. He joined the Magpies from local team St Joseph’s, and went on to play 24 VFL games and kick three goals for them from 1949 to 1951. The Fitzroy phase of his career spanned the years 1952 to 1954 and saw him play 50 games and score three goals. In addition, he was voted the club’s best and fairest player in his first season.

The 1955 season saw him crossing the Bass Strait to take up the captain-coaching reins at Wynyard in the NWFU. He was not successful in steering the side to a premiership but he did win the club’s best and fairest award in 1958.
