After struggling to make his mark at Fitzroy (39 games, 17 goals, 1991-3) and Sydney (18 games, four goals, 1994-5) Peter Caven overcame a sluggish start to his time with a third AFL club, Adelaide, to transform himself into one of the b est centre half backs in the business. His 82 AFL games with the Crows from 1996 to 2000 included the winning grand finals of 1997 and 1998, in both of which he was among the victors' best players. His aggregate tally of 34 goals with the Crows was attributable to the fact that he played for much of the 1996 season as a forward.

Determined and persistent early in his career Caven added a touch of panache and swagger to his play, with his surging runs out of the backlines epitomising the attacking verve of Adelaide under the coaching of Malcolm Blight.
