After playing reserves football with Collingwood Robert Powell was traded to Richmond ahead of the 1996 season. Mostly utilised as a forward, he proved a handy acquisition, but was hampered by hip injuries towards the end of his five season, 56 game, 23 goal stint. He was de-listed in 2000 after managing just four appearances for the year.
After nomination for the 2000 National Draft he was picked up by St Kilda with pick 75. Once again, however, he was beset by injury, this time to his calf, and in 2001 managed just 10 games and seven goals before calling time on his playing career.
