Aged just 16 years and two months when he made his senior VFL debut for St Kilda Rod Owen was prevented by persistent injuries from fully realising his potential. Over the course of an eight season stint with the Saints he only managed to register 60 games and 103 goals.

An extremely skilful half forward when fit and firing, he failed to achieve either status all that much during successive nine game stints with Melbourne in 1991 and Brisbane in 1992.

After departing the AFL scene Rod Owen embarked on something of a football pilgrimage which took in spells at Wanderers, Broadbeach, Noosa Tigers and Cheltenham.
